Michael Alig, the notorious New York promoter and self-professed “King of the Club Kids’, has been released from prison after spending 17 years behind bars for the brutal murder of his flatmate.
Alig, now 47, who masterminded some of the most extravagant parties of the early Nineties, pleaded guilty to bludgeoning the winged drug dealer Andre “Angel” Menendez to death in 1996, before pouring bleach into his mouth, dismembering his body with knives and disposing of his corpse in the Hudson River.

The former promoter was famously played by Macaulay Culkin in the 2003 film Party Monster, which was based on the novel Disco Bloodbath by original Club Kid James St James (who was played by Seth Green).
It chronicles the pair’s drug-addled exploits from the moment they met, right up until the publishing of the book, after Alig had been sentenced.

Culkin’s portrayal of Alig assisted his cultish rise to international fame, particularly in London, where the Nu Rave scene of the mid-2000s was inspired by the colourful costumes and outlandish themes of the New York clubbing scene he made popular.
And, during his spell inside, he’s been keen to capitalise on it. Far from being unproductive, he released a dance single from jail in 2001 and took part in weekly podcasts in conversation with James St James via the prison phone.
Maximising on call time, he ran the Twitter handle @Alig_Aligula from jail by instructing a friend on posts over the phone.
